Addiction recovery for teenagers in the United States

There are some encouraging signs that alcohol and drug abuse in teenagers are less of a problem in some aspects than it was before. However, just because it’s less of a problem, that doesn’t mean it isn’t a problem. The fact that minors can easily have access to drugs and alcohol is still an alarming situation.

How does alcohol or drug addiction affect teens?

Chemical dependency of any kind can seriously affect the life of a young person. Teenagers have yet to reach their full potential and alcohol or drug abuse can stunt that growth. Many areas can be affected, such as their education. Teenagers taking drugs can sometimes find their grades declining as some drugs can lead to memory loss or trouble concentrating.

Teens who become addicted to a substance could also suffer physically from their addiction. This can be because of the drug’s effect upon the body or because of an accident or something similar while the person is high on drugs. There is also the potential of contracting HIV/AIDS if one uses injection drugs.

Another big part of the minor’s life influenced by drug or alcohol addiction is relationships. Chemical dependency can be extremely strenuous for the people around the addict. This leads to unhealthy relationships. Another aspect that can become precarious is the teenager’s relationship with the law. Alcohol and drug addiction can easily lead to crimes, whether that is while they are on the drug or trying to acquire it.
All of this makes for an extremely shaky foundation for the rest of their lives. Fortunately, alcohol or substance abuse is a problem that can be addressed and handled with the correct course of treatment.
